Marine ecosystems under threat, scientists point out

The situation is getting out of control when it comes to world’s marine ecosystems. The latest report points out dangerous situation. Marine ecosystems can be only saved only if large-scale efforts would be taken to stop greenhouse gases from expansion in the atmosphere.  The researchers did comparative study of two possibilities, the situation of ocean if no actions are taken and the one with reduced emissions.

If no action taken, the ecosystems will suffer from irreversible damage by humans. By 2100, people will start feeling the reductions in many services provided by oceans, such as navigation, sea food etc. The latest emission cuts are just enough to stop rising temperature below 2 degree Celsius. These pre-industrial levels of CO2 would not do much for marine ecosystem as ocean currents would be affected by even slight temperature change.

Dr Jean-Pierre Gattuso led international team for this research. He works at France based the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche, which published the detailed report. Coastal ecosystem along with deep water marine animals would suffer due to anthropogenic factors especially CO2. The destruction of marine ecosystem is global concern as it is expected to affect every water body across the globe.

Any present policy framework is insufficient to stop this problem. United Nations climate change conference at Paris by the end of this year is expected to end up with some revolutionary changes.  Coral reefs and mangroves need to be protected more to protect coastal species. Overfishing in the tropical waters has already lead to poverty and hunger in dependent local populations.
